Abstract
This paper investigates the tuning of a PI controller for second-order-like processes with a natural frequency range between 1 and 9 rad/s and damping ratio between 0.2 and 2. MATLAB optimization toolbox and an ITAE performance index are employed to optimize the controller. The tuning results are presented in tabular form for multiple frequencies and damping ratios. A case study demonstrates the effectiveness of the tuning approach by comparing it with alternative PI tuning techniques for reference and disturbance inputs.
